Ingredients

  • 6 cups peeled and sliced apples Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter cold and cubed

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish—no sticking surprises allowed.
  • Toss apples with lemon juice, 3/4 cup sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Stir until evenly coated. Ready to become apple-y goodness.
  • Spread the apple mixture in the dish in an even layer. Don’t worry about perfection; rustic is in.
  • In a separate bowl, mix oats, 1/2 cup flour, brown sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add butter cubes and blend until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
  • Sprinkle the crumb topping over the apples. Pat it lightly to help it cling and form that satisfying crust.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender when poked with a fork.
  • Let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving. If you can resist the aroma, you’re a superhero.
